Basic Strategy — The Short Version

Full basic strategy is a chart, but most of the value sits in a handful of rules. Drill these here until they are automatic:

• Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives.
• Never take insurance. It is a side bet with a worse edge than the main game.
• Stand on hard 17 or higher, always, regardless of the dealer's card.
• Stand on 12–16 when the dealer shows 2–6; hit when they show 7 or higher.
• Double on 11 against anything, and on 10 against a dealer 2–9.
• Hit soft 17 (an ace plus six) — standing on it is one of the most common and most expensive beginner mistakes.

Rules That Change The Edge

Reading the felt before you sit down is a real skill, and it is worth more than any betting pattern. A 6:5 table costs you more than every strategy mistake a careful beginner is likely to make.

Can You Count Cards Here?

Not usefully. The shoe reshuffles regularly in this simulator, so there is no running count to exploit. What does transfer perfectly is the playing decisions — every hit, stand, double and split you drill here is the same decision you would face at a real table.

Card counting in real casinos is also far harder than films suggest: it needs continuous concentration, a large bankroll to survive variance, and it gets you asked to leave when noticed. Basic strategy is the part that is actually worth learning.
